Persons with disabilities face different barriers to participation in the labour force, even though maintaining an attachment is often crucial for them. Doing so enables them to meet everyday needs and build self-esteem, and gives a sense of belonging to the community. Here at the Yarmouth Social Enterprises, The Shanty Cafe, and The Store Next Door, 6 Central St we work tirelessly to create a truly integrated workforce. People with all abilities work side by side in jobs of their choosing, building social circles, earning an hourly wage and becoming true members of our community in every way.
In choosing to eat at our cafe and shop at our store you are supporting our mission to create sustainable employment for people with disabilities, along with a secondary mission to recycle and reuse where possible. Have you noticed our cafe is using largely recyclable materials, even straws? Our hockey stick furniture has saved thousands of old sticks from ending up in landfills, and we've even recycled old fishing rope.
Now more than ever, shopping local is essential to our community. During National Disability Employment Awareness Month and COVID-19, check out The Shanty Cafe and The Store Next Door. You won't be sorry.
